Richard Henry Hurrell Blank was born on 27 Sep 1876 at Kingsbridge, Devon, England, a son to Robert Eastley Blank and Martha Blank (nee Hurrell). He married Elizabeth Sarah Adams on 20 Mar 1907 in Queensland and they had five children.

He ventured to Queensland as a child with his parents settling in the Alton Downs district near Rockhampton, Queensland. He took an active interest in producer organisations and cooperative control. He served a term as representative of Alton Downs as a Councillor on the Fitzroy Shire Council.
