Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Richard Breydon was born on 6 Nov 1869 in Ireland, a son and one of 7 children to John Breydon and Jane Breydon (nee Savage). His father passed in 1880 and his mother emigrated with the family to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1880 settling in the town of Ramsay, Queensland.

It appears by 1896 he was living in Toowoomba, Queensland, and serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Queensland Defence Force. He spent time in England in 1898 undergoing military training. He would go on to join and serve with the 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry in the South African (Boer) War. Following his return from South Africa and discharge he appears to have been placed on permanent staff with the Defence Force and would go on serving in an instructional capacity with the Australian Defence Force moving to Melbourne, Victoria.

On 16 Sep 1903 he married Mary Donaldsen in Brisbane living at Kelvin Grove up until 1905 when they moved to Toowoomba (still serving as a instructor with the defence force), and back to Brisbane in 1913. They had 3 children during their time in Toowoomba and later Brisbane before moving to Victoria.
