Previously served as a Private in 1st South Australian Mounted Rifles
Joined the military at the time of the Russian war scare, and served in Norwood Regional Volunteer Force as well as three years in Victoria Rifles. Also served as Corporal in 5th Contingent Enlisted in AIF November 1914, discharged due to poor health August 1916.
Had a brother in the Scotch Fusiliers and two uncles killed in the Crimea
