William Broatch was born on 28 Jun 1858 at Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, a son to George Broatch and Mary Calvert Broatch (nee Bell).

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 184 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second srevice was as a Private S.N. 690 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
