Vernon Bisset Brodie was born on 2 Apr 1876 in Toowoomba, Qld, a son to John Bisset Brodie and Agnes Mary Jane Brodie (nee Thompson). His parents later became the owners of Boolcarrol Station at Narabri, New South Wales with Vernon returning to New South Wales following his war service.

Vernon served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 124 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
