Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When George William Brown enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. B. McLeod, Fitzroy St, Warwick. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, no kin relationship was recorded for his N.O.K.

In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 50, it is noted he gave his address post discharge as c/- Mr. D. McLeod, Warwick. Mrs. B. McLeod, Fitzroy St, Warwick, was also recorded as the mother and N.O.K. of a fellow soldier in the 5th QIB, Donald McLeod S.N. 385. Its assumed George William Brown was friends with Donald McLeod and living with the McLeod family in Warwick.
