Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

George Alfred Burton was born in 1869 at Brighton in Melbourne, Victoria, a son to George Montague Burton and Eliza Burton (nee Daley).

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 94 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 836 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

Its unclear at the end of his second service whether he was discharged in, or returned to, South Africa to take up employment. In 1907 he had been working as a painter with the Central South African Railways when he applied, and was approved, for repatriation to Australia. At the time of his repatriation he noted he was single.
