When Bedford Butler enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private B. Butler, widower, c/- Mr. E. Butler, Melbourne Street, Charters Towers. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 20, it is noted that, like a number of the men, he was seconded to the South African Police between 19 Jun 1900 and 10 Dec 1900.
The paybooks also note that he was attached to the 2nd QMI from 11 Dec 1900 indicating why he was not with the 1st QMI when they returned to Australia. The paybooks, unlike his discharge sheet on the Boer War Dossier, indicate he was not invalided from service when he returned to Brisbane where he was discharged 14 Mar 1901. His address post discharge was noted in the paybooks as the Prince of Wales Hotel, Mossman St, Charters Towers.
Report in The Evening Telegraph (Charters Towers), 14 Oct 1910, on the opening of the Lissner Park Memorial Kiosk (Boer War Memorial) notes his name is included on the marble tablet containing names of men from Charters Towers who served in the 1st QMI.
