Note- he is recorded as A. Caller in the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll compilation by Murray, and Henry Caller in newspaper reports regarding men from the 5th QIB who remained in South Africa when the contingent returned to Australia.
Murray, in his compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll on p. 504 to 505, notes members of the 5th QIB who enrolled/enlisted in South Africa.
A. Caller enrolled in South Africa with the 5th QIB and as such was not recorded on the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland (Imperial Bushmen) Contingent held by National Archives. He is however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 153. Its assumed he enrolled in South Africa on or about 1 Dec 1901.
Unfortunately the paybook entry only records his gratuity payment and no futher details on where he was from, N.O.K., location and date of discharge, or whether he returned to Australia. The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, reported that 538, Private Hy. Caller, remained in South Africa for further service when the 5th QIB returned to Australia.
Research by others suggests that he may have been the same Private Albert Caller S.N. 214, who had prior service with the 4th QIB. However, during the research for this biography nothing was found to corroborate what appears to be an anecdotal association.
