CAMERON'S VICTORIAN SCOUTS
Cameron, John McLeod, Lieutenant. The Scouts were named after him. Born Mt. Korong, near Wedderburn, 30/7/73. Went to Ballarat College. A good athlete. Won the Ballarat College Cup two years in succession. Grazier, living Bairnsdale. Single. Parents were both from Inverness shire, Scotland. Father Allan died in 1896. NOK: Mother, Mrs. Helen Cameron, nee McLeod, Bealiba Station, Bealiba, near St. Arnaud. Religion: Presbyterian. John McLeod or Jack as he was better known, was a Councillor of the East Riding in Bairnsdale Shire. He was also Hon. Sec. of the agricultural society. Height 5 feet 10 ins. Chest measurement 40 ins. Left Melbourne on the Euryalus, 10/3/00; disembarked Beira, 3/4/00 to join Rhodesian Field Force. Promoted Captain with Rhodesian Field Force 22/6/00. His Scouts were selected to be Carrington's bodyguard. Became Commandant at Aberdeen and Carnarvon , Cape Colony, with rank of Major in the Cape Colonial Forces. Served till the end of the war. Discharged Cameron's Scouts, 30/9/01. Medal entitlement: QSA and four clasps: cc/ofs/tvl/rhod. Awarded KSA and two claps to CCF (Cape Colonial Forces). Went to England and experimented on explosives. Was living in Lindfield, Sussex, England in 1911, when he was declared bankrupt. Married to Harriet Ellen [Ellie] Round on 2/3/1905 in Shifnal, Shropshire, He was living at Bushey, Herts at the time. Died of 'pernicious anaemia' at Wembley Park, London, England. 1/4/1923.
