Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Malcolm Livingstone Campbell served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 50, 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private S.N. 603, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.

He embarked for the first time to South Africa with the 2nd QMI on 13 Jan 1900. He was invalided from this service and returned to Brisbane for discharge on 17 May 1901. On his Boer War Dossier for that service, held by National Archives Australia, he gave his age on that date as 37 years 10 months indicating he apparently lowered his age for service.

Not long after his return he joined again in Brisbane with the 6th QIB and was selected as part of the 1st Draft of the 6th that embarked on 20 Aug 1901, some 4 months after the main 6th QIB had left. The men selected in the 1st Draft in the main consisted of men who had previously served in previous contingents in South Africa, and were being sent as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.

The men in the draft were not entered on the original nominal roll of the 6th QIB but were recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives. In his entry it is noted he returned to Australia and was discharged in Brisbane on 12 Jun 1902, and notes he gave his address post discharge as Tatham, Richmond River, NSW.

Malcolm Livingstone Campbell was born on 16 Jun 1859 at Newcastle, NSW, a son to Patrick Frederick Campbell and Ann Campbell (nee Livingston). His father passed in 1894 and in his obituary published in The Richmond River Herald, 27 Apr 1894, it noted that he had relocated his young family from Newcastle to Tatham on the Richmond River in 1869.
