Joseph Carless was born on 20 May 1878 in Ipswich, Queensland, a son to Albert Carless and Elizabeth Emma Carless (nee Ward). He married Lola Millicent Woolley on 26 Jun 1912 in Queensland and they had one child.
He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 104 with the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 44 with the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
