Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Charles Carpenter enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father H. Carpenter, Quirindu, NSW. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as his father Henry Carpenter, Quirindi, NSW.

Charles Carpenter was born in 1873 in the Murrurundi district of NSW, a son to Henry Carpenter and Elizabeth Ann Carpenter (nee Taylor). It appears after his discharge from the 5th QIB he returned to Quirindi. He married Henrietta Carpenter in 1902 at Quirindi, NSW, where they lived and had at least 2 children.

It appears he had left his family unit by 1906 through to when Henrietta passed at Quirindi on 16 Nov 1912. He was sought by the courts on a number of occasions for family desertion and in an entry in the NSW Police Gazette, 4 Dec 1912, his description included that he was a labourer and had served in South Africa with the 5th Contingent from this state (NSW). The AWM nominal roll compiled by Murray, however, contains only one Charles Carpenter who served with the 5th Qld contingent.
