David Oliver Chadwick was born at Newcastle on 2 February 1879. He was an engineer by trade, living with his mother in Glebe Point, Sydney. He served with the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles as a Regimental Staff Corporal, a rank to which he was promoted on 5 May 1901.
They departed Sydney for Port Elizabeth in March 1901, arriving in April. The Battalion took part in Colonel Remington’s column from 2 May 1901 until 28 April 1902. They took part in several actions and drives, the most successful being at Harrismith where they took 251 prisoners, 26,000 head of cattle and 2,000 horses.
The 3rd NSWMR returned to Australia in May 1902, arriving in June. They suffered 36 killed or died during the campaign. David was discharged on 12 June 1902 and had no further service.
