Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- in Murray's compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, his first given name has been recorded incorrectly as Edward Andrew Chadwick with his correct name being Edwin Andrew Chadwick.
He was already serving with the military in the Queensland Defence Force, most likely part time, prior to the Boer war. The Telegraph (Brisb) newspaper reported on 17 Mar 1899, on witness evidence given at an magisterial inquiry for a case reported as The Gatton Murders. He was called to give evidence and was identified in the opening sentence of the report as "Edwin Andrew Chadwick, farmer, said he held the rank of sergeant-major in the Gatton Mounted Infantry".
When he enlisted for the Boer war in 1899 with the 1st QMI his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, where he was recorded as Sergeant E. A. Chadwick, single, from Gatton. It appears that this initial rank was based on his prior service rank with his entry in the original nominal roll for the 1st Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, recording his rank as private.
In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 23, he is recorded as a Sergeant with a note that his rank was reduced to Private on 28 Nov 1899. The paybooks also note that he directed part of his pay to Mrs. W. Chadwick (his mother), Gatton. The entry also indicates that he joined (was seconded to) the South African Police on 19 Jun 1900 serving with them until 31 Oct 1900 when he rejoined the Contingent. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane aboard the Orient where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
Edwin Andrew Chadwick was born in Queensland on 3 May 1871, a son to William Chadwick and Agnes Chadwick (nee Keogh). He married Beatrice Jordan on 22 Feb 1901 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Gatton. A report on the wedding in The Queensland Times, 26 Feb 1909, indicates that at the time he was serving as a Sergeant-Major with the 4th Squadron, 13th Australian Light Horse. They continued to live in the Gatton district where they had 4 children.
