Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Allan Chalmers enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private A. Chalmers, single, care of Mrs J. G. Chalmers, Post office, Hope Street, Glasgow, Scotland.

In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 24, it is noted he, like a number of the men, was seconded to the South African Police. He, however, appears to have joined the police on two occasions serving longer than other men, from 28 Apr 1900 to 9 Jun 1900 and 25 Jul 1900 to 2 Nov 1900. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged 23 Jan 1901.

Given that he gave N.O.K. contact details on enlistment as being in Scotland, it is assumed he was born in Scotland on an as yet undetermined date. His discharge paper indicates his address post discharge was unknown in South Africa indicating he had returned to South Africa.
