When James Arthur Chard enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. James Chard, Spring Hill. In the Boer War Service Paybooks 6th QIB, p. 204, it notes his address as Charters Towers.
He also attempted to enlist for WW1 but was rejected due to defective eyesight, instead accepted for home duties. On his Attestation Form for service in the Civilian Forces in 1916 he noted he was; born 19 Mar 1877 at South Brisbane; married; working as a grocer; living at Darlinghurst, Sydney; and had previously served in the 6th QIB Boer War.
James Arthur Chard was born on 19 Mar 1877 at South Brisbane, a son to Capt. James Chard and Emily Chard (nee Wickens). He married Bridget Agnes Flynn (also known as Beatrice) on 15 Feb 1904 in Queensland. By 1916 when he attempted to enlist in WW1 they were living in NSW where they would have 2 children.
