Arthur Hill Clarke was born on 13 Jun 1874 in Queensland, a son to William Thomas Clarke and Sarah Margaretta Maria Clarke (nee Hill). He was living and working at Maryvale Station near Warwick when he enlisted for the Boer War and moved to Cairns sometime after returning from the war. He married Elizabeth Ellen Nelson on 17 Nov 1919 in Cairns, Queensland.
