Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

He served in both the South African (Boer) war and WW1. His surname is incorrectly recorded as Clement in some WW1 records. First service was as a Private S.N. 40, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war. Second service was as a Driver S.N. 7335, 5th Field Artillery Brigade AIF, WW1.

When Robert Clements enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. J. Clements, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 69, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. E. Clements, Kangaroo Point.

He was living in NSW in 1915 when he enlisted again for WW1. On his Attestation Paper, dated 12 Jul 1915, it is noted that; he was born at Ipswich, Qld, and was 40 years 1 month of age; he was single and a Clerk; his N.O.K. was his sister Kate (Catherine) Clements, Darlinghurst, NSW; and he had previously served with the 5th QIB in South Africa.

Robert Clements was born on 4 Jun 1871 at Ipswich, Qld, a son to John Clements and Isabella Clements (nee McGrory). His father was a well known butcher, and later landlord of the City Arms Hotel, in Ipswich. When his father passed in 1895 the family were living at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. Some time after he returned from the Boer war in 1902, his mother and the family relocated to Darlinghurst in Sydney.
