Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When William James Clements enlisted in 1901, he was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives. He is however, included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 16, and in newspaper reports.

His details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, where his N.O.K. is recorded as his mother Mrs. M. A. Clements, Cheapside St, Maryborough. He was invalided back to Australia arriving in Brisbane on 16 Sep 1901.

William James Clements was born on 6 Apr 1872 at Maryborough, a son to William Clements and Mary Ann Clements (nee Matthers). He was twice married. He first married Rosa Emily Walding on 4 Nov 1901 at Maryborough and they had 1 child before Rosa passed in 1909 at Maryborough. He then married again to Mary Ellen Hehir on 24 Aug 1912 in Queensland and they had 3 children.
