Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 231, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 45, 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

He also enlsited for WW1 but did not embark being later discharged due to misconduct, including serving a 2 months prison sentence for house breaking a few months after enlisting.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Thomas Cloherty, Breakfast Creek, Brisbane. When he enlisted again in 1902 in the 7th BACH he noted on his Attestation Paper dated 22 Apr 1902 that; he was born at Surrey Hills, NSW and was 23 years 1 month old; he was single and a labourer living at Goodna; his N.O.K. was his mother, Mrs Devine, Goodna; and he had previously served in the 6th QIB. His stated age would give a year of birth around 1879.

When he enlisted for WW1 on 5 Apr 1915 he was assigned to Base Light Horse 4th Depot, Brisbane. His Attestation Paper contains some contradictions with information he had provided on previous enlistments. On the paper dated 5 Apr 1915 he noted that; he was born at Dubbo, NSW and was 33 years 1 month old; he was single and a labourer; his N.O.K. was his Uncle Harry Cloherty, Port Alma, Qld; and he had previously served in South Africa in the 6th QIB and 7th BACH. He states a different place of birth and his stated age would give a birth year around 1882?

His WW1 service record indicates he was discharged on 20 Sep 1915 due to being AWOL and misconduct. In a letter dated 30 Aug 1915 to the Camp Commandant written by Lt Stirling, Camp Adjutant, advised that Cloherty was unsuitable for continued service due to being AWOL for 81 days and should be discharged. He noted this was due to him serving 2 months imprisonment at Boggo Road jail, sentenced for house breaking. This indiscretion was reported in local newspapers including the Truth, 4 Jul 1915, p. 8.
