 Warrant Officer, Australian Flying Corps - Service 1342.


He served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 May 1915 and embarked at Melbourne for overseas on 15 September 1915 per SS Makarini.  He was 38 and the son of Sydney and Beda Clutterbuck of Bristol House, Water Street East, South Brisbane, Queensland. Husband of Annie Florence Clutterbuck of 138 Princess Street, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, Queensland.

Mr and Mrs S. Clutterbuck, of Water Street East, South Brisbane have received word that their youngest son, Thomas Clutterbuck, warrant officer in the Flying Corps passed away on May 31 1918. Before leaving Australia he was employed as a fitter in the Ipswich Railway Workshops. He was through the Boer War. He was with the New Zealanders at the capture of German Samoa and also at the Dardenelles and in France, where he was wounded on three occasions.

 

During the 1914-18 war, there were a number of Australian Flying Corps training squadrons based in the vicinity of Leighterton. This cemetery contains the graves of 23 airmen who died whilst serving with these squadrons.

Thomas CLUTTERBUCK was born in Bedminster, Somerset, England in 1877

His parents were Andrew Sydney CLUTTERBUCK & Beda Thelia MOORE who married in England in 1867

He married Annie Florence HINSON on12th November, 1902 in Queensland -

2. Frank Maurice b. 1910  d.  1971

3. Doris Margaret b. 1904

4. Joyce Florence  b. 1908

Thomas served in the Boer War (SN 91) in the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry and returned to Brisbane on the Tongariro on 3rd May, 1901 and was discharged on 17th May, 1901 after serving 1 year & 57 days

He enlisted to serve in WW1 on 19th May, 1915 & embarked with the 1st Field Company Engineers, Reinforcements 8 from Melbourne on the HMAT Makarini 

He died from Cardiac Failure at Nailsworth, England on 22nd May, 1918 & is buried in the Leighterton Church Cemetery
