Reginald John George COLBEY was born in Adelaide to Alexander and Ellen (MASON) COLBEY and lived for his first 4 years on Coonalpyn Station where his father was the overseer. His mother moved to East Wellington in 1886 and he attended school there with his two younger brothers, Percy and Charles.

Arriving in South Africa at the end of the war, he soon returned to South Australia taking various labouring jobs until he joined the South Australian Police Force, 1 October 1906.

He served with the SA Police at Adelaide, Kapunda, Blanchetown, Port Wakefield, Eudunda, Hamley Bridge and Gumeracha. He retired at Gumeracha,  with the rank of Sergeant 3rd Grade, on 3 June 1943.

He lived in retirement at Naracoorte with one of his sons until he was admitted to the RAH where he died 25 September 1958. He is buried alongside his wife Agnes Mary COLBEY in the Gumeracha North Cemetery.
