Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Also served in WW1, Private S.N. 1409, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force AIF.

McLachlan's notes on his index to Murray's Boer War Nominal roll suggests that this soldier served twice in the Boer War, with Murray recording him in a prior service as Joseph Colquhoun, S.N. 133 in the 1st Qld Mounted Infantry. It is noted that the Boer War Service Paybooks held by Qld State Archives for the 1st QMI and 6th QIB contingents record the soldier on both occasions under the surname Colquhoun, and indicate he was from Mount Morgan. It is also noted for the 1st QMI service he directed part of his pay to Mrs. J. Colquhoun, Gordon St, Mount Morgan.

When Joseph Colquhon enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published (under Colquhoun) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as J. Colquhoun, Australia St., Mount Morgan. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 40, it notes his address as Gordon St., Mount Morgan.

When Joseph Colquhoun enlisted for WW1 on 6 Aug 1918 he noted on his Attestation Paper that; he was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 11 Jul 1879 and was 31 years 1 month old; he worked as a timber getter while living at Windsor, Brisbane; his N.O.K. was his father James Colquhoun, Patterson St, Mount Morgan; and that he had previously served in South Africa. On his Application to Enlist he noted the Windsor address he resided at was that of his sister Mrs E. Goodwin (Helen Ferguson Colquhoun had married Edmund Gore Goodwin in 1907).

Joseph Colquhoun was born on 11 Jul 1879 at Edinburgh, Scotland, a son to James Coloquhoun and Jane Colquhoun (nee Hush). When his father passed in 1925 at Mount Morgan an obituary was published in several newspapers indicating he and his family had taken up residence there more than 30 years previous and he had served as the Mount Morgan Council Town Inspector for 25 years.
