James Frederick Counter served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 168, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Sapper S.N. 7496, Tunnelling Companies (3rd Tunnelling Company) AIF, WW1.
When he first enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. F. Counter, single, c/- Mrs. H. Miller, Wray St, Gympie. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 30, it was noted he, like a number of the men, was seconded to the South African Police between 19 Jun 1900 and 19 Sep 1900. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged 23 Jan 1901.
He enlisted again in 1917 in WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 22 May 1917, it was noted that; he was born at Hobart, Tasmania, and was 38 years 9 months of age; he was married with 2 children and was a miner; his N.O.K. was his wife Margaret Western Counter, Clayton St, Sandgate; and he had previously served in South Africa with the 1st QMI.
James Frederick Counter was born on 26 Aug 1878 at Bothwell, Tasmania, a son to Henry Counter and Emily Counter (nee Stanley). He married Margaret Weston McLean on 1 Dec 1902 in Queensland and they had 2 children.
