James Courtney served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1, first as a Private S.N. 164 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War, and second as a Sergeant (later reduced to Private) S.N. 338 in the 10th Infantry Battalion AIF WW1 (sources AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 470 and National Archives Australia WW1 service records).
