Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
After serving in the Boer war he also served in WW1, Private S.N. 2101, 4th Pioneer Battalion, AIF.
His younger brother, John Cousins, also served in the Boer war Private S.N. 372, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, who died in South Africa from disease on 15 May 1901.
When Thomas Henry Cousins enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. R. Cousins, Stanwell. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 1 p. 57, it is noted that he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. Cousins, Stanwell, Qld. Central Railway.
When he enlisted again in 1916 for WW1 on his Attestation Form, dated 28 Feb 1916, it is noted that; he was born at Kilmun, Argyllshire, Scotland, and was 37 years 2 months of age (appears he lowered is age); he was single and a labourer; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs Mary Cousins, Stanwell; and he had previously served in South Africa with the 6th QIB.
Thomas Henry Cousins was born in about 1876 at Kilmun, Argyllshire, Scotland, a son to Robert Cousins and Mary Cousins (nee Fowler or Fowlar). Robert and Mary emigrated with their children to Australia in 1891 eventually settling at Stanwell, Qld, where they both passed in 1924 and 1923 respectively.
Thomas Henry Cousins married Louisa Lawrence (nee Hill) on 2 Feb 1920 in Queensland and they lived at Stanwell where he farmed a property he had acquired called Moorlands. He was still working the farm prior to a short illness and his passing in 1940.
