AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS. THE SECOND CONTINGENT.
The Advertiser, 12 February 1902
AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS.
THE SECOND CONTINGENT.
The men for the South Australian unit the Second Federal Contingent, who have been provisionally selected, went into camp at the Jubilee Oval on Tuesday morning. They were drawn from various parts of the State, and collectively appear equal to the First Contingent. They are located in the annexe near to the Frome-road on the eastern side of the oval, and, like the first Commonwealth Contingent, will not go under canvas. The men paraded at their camping-place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday for inspection by the camp commandant (Major C. J. Reade, C.B.), who handed them over to Major Leith Napier, P.M.O, and Captain Smithson Dunn for medical examination. The doctors first turned their attention to the mouths of the volunteers in order to ascertain whether their teeth were sound enough to masticate "forty-niners" biscuits served out to troopers on the veldt and those whose molars showed signs of decay have not the same chance of going to the war as their comrades possessed of sound teeth.
When the doctors had finished their inspection, Major Reade handed the troops over to Master-Gunner Marshall, with instructions that they should be employed in the first instance in making their temporary home clean and comfortable.
F. A. Teakle, C. R. Seymour, T. J. Willcocks, and F. C. Powell have been appointed acting corporals.
The undermentioned men, who came from the country districts, have been sworn in:-
