Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Robert Lyden Crone enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as B. Crone, H. M. Navy, England. In the original Nominal Roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted his N.O.K. was his brother.

Qld BDM records for his death do not give details for his parents which appears to point to him being born outside Australia, most likely England, and being single at the time he passed. Burial records for the South Rockhampton Cemetery where he is interred indicate he was 59 years of age when buried on 3 Jan 1917, meaning he was born about 1857.

While on active service in South Africa in 1902 he wrote a letter detailing his time there to Mr. M. Lavercombe at Winton, which was subsequently published as an article in The Western Champion on 10 May 1902. In that article it noted he was well known in the Central District of Queensland. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 142, it gave his address as Elderslie Station, Winton, which is located in the Channel Country about 60km west of Winton where he was possibly working/residing when he enlisted.

After he passed in Jan 1917, a newspaper report in The Capricornian, 28 May 1921, indicates the court had approved Letters of Administration for the executor on his will. The article reported he was a well-borer at Blackall at the time he passed.
