William Robert Crump was born on 2 Oct 1880 at Maryborough, Queensland, a son to William Cramp and Mirinda Crump (nee Whayman). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. M. Crump, Maryborough.
After returning from the South African (Boer) War he emigrated to New Zealand around 1903 where he undertook farming operations and a blacksmith business. He married Annie Patterson Allison in 1906 in New Zealand and they had 5 children.
