When Charles Joseph Cullen enlisted for the South African (Boer) War in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as C. Cullen, Hamilton. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 69, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. R. Cullen, William St, Hamilton.
Charles Joseph Cullen was born in 1877 at Liverpool, England, a son to Charles Cullen and Rose Cullen (nee Gracey). At the age of 11 he emigrated to Queensland with his parents and 4 siblings aboard the Jumna arriving at Brisbane on 12 Dec 1889. Sometime after his discharge in Brisbane from the 6th QIB he made his way to Victoria, where he married Margaret Ann Sheldon-Collins in 1907 and they had 3 children residing at Tarnagulla and Fitzroy.
When he enlisted for WW1 he noted on his Attestation Form dated 7 Sep 1915 that; he was born at Liverpool, England, and was 38 years 3 months old; he was an Electrician's Assistant; his N.O.K. was his wife Margaret Ann Cullen, Spring Hill, Tarnagulla; and he had previously served in South Africa. In his bio on the Australian Boer War Memorial database it is noted that following his return from WW1 the family lived in Fitzroy.
