Edward Arthur Daly

Edward Arthur Daly was born in about 1857 in Cork, Ireland, to Charles John Daly, Solicitor (and later Coroner) of Springville, Kanturk, Cork, Ireland and his wife Maria or Mary Adeline (nee O'Neil).

He was baptised at Ballyclough, Cork, Ireland on 6 January 1857.

Name: Edward Daly
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 6 Jan 1857
Baptism Place: Ballyclough, Cork, Ireland
Diocese: Cloyne
Father: Charles J Daly
Mother: Maria O'Neil (or Mary Adeline O'Neil)

After emigrating to Australia, he seems to have lost contact with his brother John A Daly, who lists notices seeking his whereabouts in both 1878 and in 1883.

In the 18 January 1890 "Queenslander" a notice of marriage is published, between Edward Arthur Daly and May Stella Mellish on 27 December 1889 (Qld BDM Reference: 1889/B013748)

DALY—MELLISH.—On the 27th December, at St. Stephen's Cathedral, by the Rev. Father Fouhy, Edward A. Daly, third son of Charles Daly, Esq., Solicitor and County Coroner, Springville, Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland, to May Stella, eldest daughter of Major Mellish, late of Her Majesty's Transport and Commissariat Department. [Home papers please copy.]

Edward Arthur and Mary/May Stella had three boys:

Anthony Dunsandle Daly (born 1893-1963)
Geoffrey Dunsandle Daly (born 1896-1982)
Wilfred Dunsandle Daly (born 1898-1955).

Sadly, Mary/May Stella passed away in 1898. (Source: QLD BDM: 1898 C2587 Mary Stella Daly George Whittker Mellish Mary Livingstone).

In "The Queenslander" pictorial supplement, 3 March 1900, page 406, Edward Arthur Daly was described as single and his address was Ambeena c/ Mrs Mellish, Melbourne Street, Brisbane. Perhaps when he first enlisted in the Third Queensland Contingent, he was newly widowed? Perhaps Mrs Mellish was his mother in law and was helping to raise the three young boys?

Edward Arthur Daly marries again in 1900, this time to Gertrude Augusta Mellish:

Name: Edward Arthur Daly
Spouse Name: Gertrude Augusta Mellish
Marriage Date: 08 Jan 1900
Marriage Place: Queensland
Registration Place: Queensland
Registration Year: 1900
Registration Number: B000047
Page Number: 6005

The death index of both his second wife Gertrude Augusta and first wife Mary/May Stella list the same parents - so he married sisters.

In the 1920's he and Gertrude are living up in Caboolture shire - where he lists his occupation as "Caretaker". By 1934 they are back living in Brisbane, at "Elimbah", Cork St, Yeronga. Edward has no occupation listed by this stage (aged approximately 77), and his son, Geoffrey Dunsandle Daly, is living with his parents, having the occupation of "public servant".

Edward Arthur Daly died in 1935 in Brisbane, Queensland. (Source: QLD BDM: 1935 B29449 Edward Arthur Daly Charles John Maria O'Neill).

He was buried in South Brisbane Cemetery, on 9 October 1935, in 2H-301.
