Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Macintosh (Mackintosh) Davidson enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. M. Davidson, married, Flinders St. West, Townsville. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 34, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his wife Mrs. J, M. Davidson, Flinders St. West, Townsville.

He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.

John Mackintosh Davidson was born on 18 Feb 1861 at Macduff, Banff, Scotland, a son to John Davidson and Jane Davidson (nee Mackintosh). In the latter part of the 1880s he had ventured to South Africa where he worked in the Kimberley Diamond Mines. He married Mary McMurtrie on 20 Aug 1889 at Johannesburg. They had 1 child in South Africa in 1890 who sadly passed in 1896.

A year later they had relocated to Queensland where the next of their 7 children was born. When he enlisted in 1899 they were residing in Townsville. After returning from the war they ventured to the Atherton Tablelands and resided at the town of Wolfram, in the shire of Mareeba, where he worked mining the mineral Wolfram.
