Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Miss M. Davis, Cooktown. In the Boer War Service Paybooks 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 21, it contains a note against his entry stating his address as c/- Miss M. Davis, Central State Schools, Gympie. This was his older sister Margaret who had a lifelong career as a teacher with Qld State Schools. It appears their parents had passed prior to 1901.
Michael Davis was born on 2 Jan 1869 at Rockhampton, a son to John Davis and Bridget Davis (nee Lindsay).
Michael also attempted to enlist in 1916 for WW1 but was rejected due to his age. In his enlistment records held by the National Archives he noted on his Attestation Form on 2 Oct 1916 that; he born at Rockhampton and was 44.5 years old; he was single and a labourer; his N.O.K. was his sister Margaret Davis, State Public School, Rockhampton; and he had previously served in Qld Bushmen, South African (Boer) War. On the detailed medical history compiled at his enlistment it was declared he was actually 47 years old. It appears Michael never married.
Margaret Davis, his sister, passed on 26 Jan 1940 in Brisbane and was interred at the Nudgee Cemetery and Crematorium. In a probate notice for her will in The Courier Mail, 10 Feb 1940, it notes she was a retired State School Teacher and spinster.
