Served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1
- Corporal S.N. 353, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war,
- Driver S.N. 186, 6th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.
He is recorded incorrectly under the surname Denison on his Boer war records, and correctly under surname Dennison on his WW1 records.
When John Taylor Denison (Dennison) enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as F. L. Denison, Sunderland, England. In the original Nominal Roll of the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted his N.O.K. was his brother. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 134, notes he was discharged in South Africa before the 6th QIB returned to Australia.
He made his way back to Australia at some point and was residing/working at the Falstaff Restaurant, Spencer St, Melbourne, in 1914 when he again enlisted for WW1.
On his Attestation Paper and Form, dated 17 Aug 1914, it is noted that; he was born at Port Askaig, Argyle, Scotland, on 27 Sep 1876; he was single with the trade of bushman, his N.O.K. was his brother F. L. Dennison, Monbulk, Victoria; and he had previously served with Kitcherner's Fighting Scouts and the Qld Imperial Bushmen in South Africa.
