Full name of Osmond Edward Dent is provided in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 132.
When Osmond Dent enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. A. Dent, 7 Stafford Rd, Newport, Mon. (Monmouthshire), England.
Though Newport is in Wales it was considered by some to be part of England, especially after the 1530's when the acts of union were passed under the reign of King Henry VIII extending English laws and norms into Wales. Newport is within the county of Monmouthshire which was officially recognised as part of Wales under the Local Government Act 1972.
Osmond Edward Dent was born on 5 Feb 1880 at Newport, Wales, a son to William Allen Dent and Lucy Dent (nee Bowyer). His father was himself born at Newport, Monmouthshire. In the England and Wales census of 1891 William was still living there with his wife and 7 children including the 11 year old son Osmond. In the England and Wales census of 1901, taken 31 Mar 1901, he was still living there with his wife and 5 children but Osmond was not listed. By then Osmond was in Australia enlisting in 1901 and embarking for South Africa on 6 Mar 1901.
The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 132, notes that at the end of his service he remained in South Africa awaiting passage to England when the 5th QIB returned to Australia. It notes he later sailed for England aboard Manhattan with his discharge taken to be from 13 Jun 1902. Its assumed he went back to England to rejoin his family at Newport.
At some later point he made his way to Canada and by 1913 was residing in British Columbia. He married Mary Jane Findlay on 5 Feb 1913 at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was residing in the rural community of Flood (Floods) in the district of Hope, British Columbia, when he passed in 1927. He was interred at the Chilliwack Cemeteries, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
