Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Murray, in his compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll on p. 504 to 505, notes members of the 5th QIB who enrolled/enlisted in South Africa.

L. H. Destree enrolled in South Africa with the 5th QIB and as such was not recorded on the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland (Imperial Bushmen) Contingent held by National Archives. He also does not appear in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB. It appears that material that Murray was able to reference in compiling the AWM roll is not amongst the material digitised and made available online by either National Archives or Qld State Archives. Its assumed he enrolled in South Africa on or about 1 Dec 1901.

As he is not entered in the paybooks, material is not available to establish where he was from prior to enrolling with the 5th QIB or information on N.O.K. The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, reported that 539, Private L. H. Destree, remained in South Africa for further service when the 5th QIB returned to Australia. Without an entry in the paybooks for him there is no information available for a location or date of discharge or return to Australia.

It is possible that he is the same Louis Hamilton Destree that enlisted in South Africa on 22 Apr 1902 with the Scottish Horse from which he was discharged 6 Jul 1902 when they disbanded, but evidence to corroborate this has not been found.
