Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Arthur Ernest Devine was born on 22 July 1881 in Queensland, a son to Philip Eena Devine and Helen Devine (nee Handcock). At the time of his enlistment for the South African (Boer) War he noted his N.O.K. as his father Mr. P. Devine at Spring Grove, Surat.
Newspaper reports indicate on his return from the war he commenced studying dentistry in Brisbane for which he qualified and opened a practice at Pittsworth, Queensland. In other reports it was noted he was engaged to be married in 1907, however, he had been suffering illness including insomnia for some time when he died of a gunshot wound in 1908 at Spring Grove, Surat, with the indication it was self inflicted.
