Theophilus Thomas Douglas was born on 18 Jun 1879 in Queensland, a son to Franklin Randolph Douglas and Anna Maria Douglas (nee Thomas). He married Naomi Marian Ingle on 21 Feb 1923 in Queensland.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 218 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private (rising to Corporal) S.N. 46 in the 11th Machine Gun Company AIF, WW1.
