Major Dove, D.S.O., is to the schoolboys of New South Wales, perhaps, the best known military officer, by reason ot his occupancy of the position of Adjutant of the Public School Cadets. His early military education was gained as a private in the Scottish Rifles, and in the same humble position in the Inverell Company of the Mounted Rifles. He reached the rank of captain in the Scottish Rifles in 1891, and served with that rank in the 1st New South Wales Infantry Regiment in Africa.
For his services in the field he received the Distinguished Service Order and was promoted to the rank of brevet - major. On His return to Australia Captain Dove again volunteered for active service, and returned to Africa with the 3rd. Battalion of the Australian Commonwealth Horse, remaining there until the declaration of peace. He is an officer who has strong claims to advancement when the work of reorganising the cadet forces is undertaken.
