James Edward Durack was born in 1871 at Clunes, Victoria, a son to Cornelius Durack and Bridget Durack (nee Hubbard). He married Ellen Isabelle Allen on 7 Dec 1916 in London while abroad serving in the AIF during WW1. He returned to Victoria where he was discharged in 1919 and they would go on to have 3 children.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 165 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Saddler Corporal (later Corporal) S.N. 6466 in the 7th Infantry Brigade Train (later 17th Aust. Army Service Corps), AIF, WW1. At the time of enlistment for both the Boer War and WW1 he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs C. Durack at Telangatuk in Victoria.
