Boer War Veteran
The death at the Memorial Hospital, Scottsdale, an Tuesday last of Mr William Lawrence Eddy, of Derby, removes one of its best-known residents, and the last of the Boer War veterans in the district. Mr Eddy, who was 69 years of age, was born at Golden Gully, Victoria, and came to Derby nearly 50 years ago. He served in the Boer War with the Tasmanian Bushmen's Contingent, and on his return continued to reside in Derby. His wife died about two years ago. There are four sons : — William (Melbourne), Winifred (Derby), Herbert (Derby), and Cyril (Lauuceston ) . The late Mr Eddy was mail contractor at Derby for over 20 years and also was responsible for the conveyance of school children with whom he was very popular. He was a quiet type of man, a good citizen and highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. The funeral was a private one, and took place yesterday morning, the remains being interred in the Branxholm cemetery. The Rev. Costelloe conducted the service. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Chas. Parker, Scottsdale.
