NOK E ELSTON, Geraldton
Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Thomas Elston is noted as born in 1879 (location unknown), a son to William Elston and Mary Elston (nee Snell) from BDM Qld death registration. His enlistment photograph was published in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, in which it was noted his N.O.K. was E. Elston of Geraldton. A prior article in The Queenslander, 9 Mar 1901, notes Thomas had sailed from Geraldton for Brisbane to join the 5th Queensland Contingent for service in the South African (Boer) War.
Geraldton is in far north Queensland and was renamed as Innisfail in 1910. His probate notice following his death notes his former occupation was Cane Farmer and that the nominated executor for his will was Ernest Elston, in all likihood the same E. Elston he nominated as N.O.K. when he enlisted. It appears he was unmarried.
