Lieut. E.C. Evans - Another among the many young Tasmanians who, at the call of the mother country, went forth to the battlefield, and has there offered up his young life.  News of his death at Klipplatt, South Africa on 16th August last, came to hand this week.  Deceased was a resident of Sandy Bay.  He was th eson of the late H.B. Evans, shipowner, of Hobart and brother of Mr. L.A. Evans, of the Agricultural Department, and at the time of his death was only in his 21st year.  He went out to the war from Tasmania in the transport chicago.  He served under Major Cameron, and, almost immediately on his arrival in Africa, was made acting-lieutenant of the Midland Mounted Infantry in Cape Colony.  He afterwards placed in charge at Klipplaat.  The deceased lieutenant was of a bright disposition with sportsmanlike tastes, and his early death in the service of his country will be lamented by a large circle.

Ernest Chambers Evans was the son of H B Evans, shipowner of Hobart and brother of D A Evans of the Agricultural Department. Evans was educated at Hutchins School in Hobart, was a member of the Sandy Bay Rifle Corps, and at the time of his death was in his 21st year. He went out to the war from Tasmania in the transport Chicago as a member of the second draft of the Tasmanian Mounted Infantry. He served under Major Cameron, and almost immediately on his arrival in Africa, was made acting lieutenant of the Midland Mounted Infantry in Cape Colony. He was afterwards placed in charge at Klipplaat.
