When Edward Henry Farmer enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private E. N. Farmer, Newstead Terrace, Newstead. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 40, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. J. C. Farmer, Newstead Terrace, Newstead. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
The Mrs. J. C. Farmer noted in the paybooks above was the wife of his older brother, ships Captain James Carnegie Farmer. They along with at least one of their brothers, Marcus Anthony Farmer, had enigrated from Ireland to Queensland.
Edward Henry Farmer was born about 1858 at Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, a son to Edward Christopher Lysaght Farmer and Maria Louisa Jane "Louisa" Farmer (nee Carnegie).
