Given he remained in hospital when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia on 27 Mar 1902, discharge date is likely to be correct.

Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Frederick Fenwick enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father R. Fenwick, Quay St, North Quay, Brisbane.

He was severely wounded during the Battle of Onverwacht on 4 Jan 1902. When the 5th QIB contingent embarked to return to Australia on 27 Mar 1902, newspaper reports have him remaining behind still in hospital. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 130, it is noted that he advised the pay officer that he had been discharged on 10 Apr 1902, its assumed in South Africa which they appear to dispute, but it appears likely as no further entry of an alternate date was made.
