When William Nathaniel Fincham enlisted in 1901, he was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives. He is however, included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 28, and in newspaper reports.
His details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, where his N.O.K. is recorded as his sister Mrs. A. T. Gallichan, Kennigo St, Brisbane. His sister Julia Elizabeth Fincham had married Alfred Thomas Gallichan in 1892. The newspaper records his name as Nathaniel William Fincham, however, the Boer War Service Paybooks record him as William Nathaniel Fincham.
William Nathaniel Fincham was born in Mar 1874 at Kenninghall, Norfolk, England, a son to David Fincham and Phillis Fincham (nee Pilgrim). He was one of eight children who emigrated with his parents, when he was still a toddler, to Queensland aboard Ophelia in 1875. While still in quarantine his sister Matilda passed followed by his mother a few days later. His father passed in 1886 while he was 11 or 12 years old suggesting he was then cared for by his older siblings.
He married Helen McAllan on 23 Aug 1905 at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane.
