It appears that John James Flamank served twice in the South African (Boer) War noting in his second service his surname was spelt as Flamark. First service was as a Private S.N. 154 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 614 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. (sources AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 470 & 518 and Boer War Unit Details, Murray p. 519 where it notes all but 3 on the roll had served in previous contingents).
Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- he was recorded by Murray on the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll under the names John James Flamank and John James Flamark for each respective service. However the Boer War Service Paybooks recoord both his service under the correct name of John James Flamank.
John James Flamank served twice in the South African (Boer) war. First service was as a Private S.N. 154 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private S.N. 614 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).
When he joined the 3rd QMI in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 3 Mar 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. J. Flamank, Kangaroo Flat, near Bendigo, Victoria. He served the full tour with the 3rd QMI and was discaharged in Brisbane on 20 Jun 1901.
He then later joined again with the 1st Draft of the 6th QIB that embarked on 20 Aug 1901, some 4 months after the main 6th QIB had left. The men selected in the 1st Draft in the main consisted of men who had previously served in previous contingents in South Africa, and were being sent as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
The men in the draft were not entered on the original nominal roll of the 6th QIB but were recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (which he was allotted to) held by Qld State Archives. Newspaper reports note when the 5th QIB returned to Australia a number of men remained in South Africa for various reasons including for further service.
Report in The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 614, Private John J. Flamank, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 52, notes he returned to Brisbane and was discharged from 9 Aug 1902. The Paybook also notes that following his discharge he was granted a pass to travel to Mount Morgan.
John James Flamank was born about 1869 in Victoria, a son to James Flamank and Elizabeth Flamank (nee James). He had married Mary Ann Smith on 30 Nov 1891 in Queensland and they had 3 children prior to him embarking for the first service in 1900. It is unclear why he gave his mother at Kangaroo Flat, Victoria, as his N.O.K. in 1900 given his marriage. After he returned from his second service in 1902 a 4th child was born in May 1905, just prior to John's passing in Jun 1905. His wife Mary married again in 1908 to Harry William Whimp.
