When Patrick Joseph Flanagan enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Miss Flanagan, Post Office, Dalby. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 37, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his sister Miss M. (May) Flanagan, P.O., Dalby. His brother, John Joseph Flanagan, also served in the South African (Boer) War, S.N. 839, 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

Patrick Joseph Flanagan was born on 9 Oct 1880 at Dalby, a son to Patrick Flanagan and Bridget Flanagan (nee Looney). He married Mary Patricia Ryan on 25 Oct 1916 in Queensland.

When he enlisted in 1914 for WW1 he noted on his Attestation Paper dated 23 Aug 1914 that; he was born at Dalby and was 33 years 6 months old; He was a Clerk and his N.O.K. was his brother John Joseph Flanagan, Prince of Wales Hotel, Brisbane; and he had previously served in the Boer War in the 6th QIB.
