Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- John Joseph Farrell was incorrectly recorded as John Joseph Forrel for his second service in the AWM Boer War Nominal compiled by Murray, p. 519. He is correctly recorded as John Joseph Farrell in the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB for his second service.

John Joseph Farrell served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 82, 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 665, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).

When he joined the 4th QIB in 1900 he was missing from the photos and details of the rank and file published in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900. He was, however, recorded in the original nominal roll for the 4th Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, where he noted his N.O.K. as Thomas Farrell (warder), Lunatic Asylum, Goodna. It is assumed Thomas, who passed at Ipswich in 1901 at the age of 59, was his father. His obituary in The Queensland Times, 20 Jul 1901, noted that at the time of his death he was one of the oldest warders at the Goodna Asylum.

He was invalided from from service with the 4th QIB and returned to Brisbane for discharge on 13 Mar 1901. Not long after he was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.

Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB but he is recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 101. When the 5th QIB returned to Australia, several of the men remained in South Africa for various reasons.

The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 665, Private John J. Farrell, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 101, notes he returned to Brisbane aboard the Manchester Merchant and was discharged 9 Aug 1902.

Details of his date and place of birth and his life after returning from the war were not able to be ascertained.
